Can You Do It? A Few Ways to Describe Your Career Goals and Your Potential Contribution to Your Community

Can You Do It? A Few Ways to Describe Your Career Goals and Your Potential Contribution to Your CommunityThe most important thing you should be able to do when describing your career goals and your potential contribution to your community is to keep it as short as possible. Here are a few ways to do this:* Begin by explaining the steps that led you to your current position and then tell about your own specific career interests. You could also mention the interests of your spouse, children or the people who are closest to you. For example, if you are in the field of education, you might state: 'I want to teach...I would like to take a special interest in...in the subject of...education.'* When you begin to talk about your work, use examples and quotes from personal experiences. You can even draw on work by leading experts in your field or on the work you have done before. Try to be as specific as possible in describing your career goals and your potential contribution to your communit y.* Describe your passions and interests. You can share them with the audience you are addressing. Using the same examples and quotes you used earlier, you can explain your point to a group of businesspeople. But remember that you can't communicate directly with one another.* Identify three to five areas where you are good at and discuss what you would do to achieve career goals in those areas. For example, if you have several talents such as playwriting, marketing, creative writing, transcription, teaching and speaking, describe them to a group of people. You might make up a job application that you could present.* What are some of the areas where you need more help to meet your career goals? You might have developed specific skills in areas such as playwriting, marketing, creative writing, classroom teaching, physical science, accounting, engineering and other technical skills. Take a moment to discuss these areas with the group you are addressing.* Share your strengths, and use e xamples of your best work to illustrate your career goals. For example, if you have written well on many topics and you want to become a speechwriter, you could discuss this in terms of an opportunity to improve your creative writing. When you speak in front of a group of people who are the people you need to become to meet your career goals and your potential contribution to your community, be sure that you stay focused on your goals and that your presentation is clear and to the point. The people who are listening will enjoy your presentation and your career goals and their contributions will serve as encouragement for you in your journey.
